Bhubaneswar, March 28: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report from the Odisha government, UGC, and NAAC within four weeks regarding the suicide of a 20-year-old Nepalese female B.Tech student Prakriti Lamsal at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar.

The rights panel has directed Odisha’s chief secretary, Khurda district collector, police commissioner, and the heads of UGC and NAAC to submit their reports.

The case sparked nationwide outrage and led to intervention by Nepal’s Prime Minister.

In response, the NHRC dispatched a team for an on-the-spot investigation and, on March 27, uploaded the case status on its website.

The commission has now sought an action-taken report from the Odisha government, directing the chief secretary, Khurda district collector, commissioner of police, and the chairpersons of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to submit their findings within four weeks.
