Ranchi, Nov 2: In the 2023 World Cup, India continued their impressive performance by achieving their seventh consecutive victory. On Thursday, in the match played at Wankhede, India defeated Sri Lanka by 302 runs which is the biggest win for India in an ODI World Cup in terms of run margin.

With this win, India has climbed to the top of the points table. First, the batsmen performed exceptionally well, and then the bowlers followed suit. India outplayed the Lankans in batting as well as bowling giving them a deja vu of the Asia Cup final.

After losing the toss, India, while batting first, posted a massive score of 357 runs on the strength of Virat Kohli’s 88, Shubman Gill’s 92, and Shreyas Iyer’s 82. India lost the wicket of Rohit Sharma on the second ball of the match but after that Gill and Kohli made an impressive partnership to take India in a position to post a mammoth total. Shreyas played a quick-fire knock of 82 and Jadeja who was there till the end also batted with a commendable strike rate.

In response, Sri Lanka had a very forgettable start as Nissanka was lbw on the very first ball by Bumrah. Following this, Siraj took two wickets in the second over to put Sri Lanka on the backfoot and clean bowled the skipper Mendis in the fourth over. After this, there was no coming back for the Lankans as Shami did the rest and finished the game with the figures of 5/18. Sri Lanka was all out for 55 runs. Five Lankan batters were dismissed for a duck.

With this five-wicket haul which is his fourth, Shami cliched the record of most five-fors for India in ODIs. Shami bagged the ‘Man of the Match’ award.
