New Delhi, May 31: During the current Lok Sabha elections, the Income Tax Department has reportedly seized a record amount of cash and jewellery, totalling Rs 1100 crore.

Sources indicate that by May 30th, the department had seized approximately Rs 1100 crore in cash and jewellery. This represents a 182 percent increase from the Rs 390 crore seized during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The Election Commission of India announced the dates of the Lok Sabha elections on March 16, which also marked the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

The Income Tax Department has since then been keeping a close eye on and seizing any unaccounted money or assets that might have the ability to sway voters.

Sources reveal that Delhi and Karnataka led the list for the highest seizures, with each state accounting for over Rs 200 crore in cash and jewellery.

Tamil Nadu came next with the second-highest seizure, totalling Rs 150 crore. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha together accounted for over Rs 100 crore seizures of cash and jewellery.
