Chennai, March 21: Ruturaj Gaikwad has been appointed as the new skipper of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the upcoming IPL season after Mahendra Singh Dhoni stepped down from his position as the captain of the team.
Dhoni’s lengthy tenure as the captain of the CSK, during which he guided the team to five IPL championships, comes to an end with this decision.
Dhoni captained the CSK for 212 IPL games, with 128 victories and 82 defeats.
Notably, at the beginning of the 2022 season, Dhoni gave all-arounder Ravindra Jadeja the captaincy mantle, but after just eight games, he came back to lead the team once more after Jadeja stepped down.

“MS Dhoni handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to batter Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period,” stated CSK in an official announcement on Thursday.
Since his debut for CSK in 2019, Ruturaj Gaikwad has garnered immense support from fans. In his IPL career, he has accumulated 1,797 runs at an average of 39.07 and a strike rate of 135.52. Gaikwad has registered one century and 14 half-centuries, with his highest score being an unbeaten 101*.
