Jamshedpur, March 30: Bike-borne criminals shot dead a 48-year-old woman on NH-33 under the Chandil Thana area in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district near Jamshedpur late on Friday night having an abortive bid to extort ‘rangdari’ from the victim’s businessman husband.

The incident took place near the 10th Miles Stone restaurant at about 10 pm while the woman Jyoti Agarwal was returning home along with her husband Ravi Agarwal and their two sons in a car from a restaurant at Bhilaiahadi in MGM Thana area.

Shot in the head

During the travel, Jyoti had felt some discomfort, leading the husband to stop the car near the 10th Miles Stone restaurant for a brief period during which the bike-borne criminals had launched the gun-shot attack on the woman.

Soon after Jyoti was critically injured as she was shot in the head, Ravi Agarwal had rushed her to Tata Main Hospital, about 20 minutes’ drive from the spot, where the doctors on emergency duty declared her dead.

Ravi Agarwal has a plywood business having his office-cum-godown at Bhuiyandih in Sitaramdera and resides at Astha High-tech City along the Marine Drive in Sonari.

Rs 25 lakh ransom demand on Feb 23

On February 23, Ravi Agarwal had found a piece of paper stuck at his car’s door near his shop at Bhuiyandih. In the paper unknown persons had demanded him to pay Rs 25 lakhs as ‘rangdari.’  It was instructed in the letter that the money was to be paid near Domuhani Bridge at 11 am on February 26.

Having taken the letter to be a mischievous act by some local goon, Ravi Agarwal had immediately lodged a verbal complaint with the Sitarmdera Thana, seeking protection of his life and property.

Ravi Agarwal did not lodge written complaint

Sitaramdera Thana OC, Bhushan Kumar confirmed about getting a complaint of extortion from the businessman but claimed the complainant did not lodge a written complaint despite repeated pleas by him.

“When the complainant did not lodge a written complaint, I gave my personal and official contact number to him and instructed him to contact me if anything similar happens. At the same time, I had started keeping a watch on the suspects, ” said Kumar while talking to The Jharkhand Story.

The OC, said they are trying to detect the case by teaming up with the Seraikela-Kharsawan police and hope to unravel the case soon.

Kumar, on being queried, said they are at a loss when they come to the point of investigation why did the criminals spare the husband and his two grown-up sons while killing the wife only?

Seraikela-Kharsawan SP, Manish Toppo claimed the investigation into the sensational murder is on, adding that they expect a breakthrough soon.

Traders body, Health Minister condemn murder

Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce & Industries, Vijay Anand Moonka observed that the law and order situation in the steel city and around deteriorated extremely. He has demanded immediate arrest of the criminals involved in the murder of Jyoti Agarwal.

Another member of the traders’ body said the police here have developed a laidback tendency ever since the CCTV footage culture has set in.

Meanwhile, health Minister Baana Gupta condemned the murder of the businessman’s wife for ransom and said he would talk to the state police authority to get the culprits arrested as soon as possible.
