Jamshedpur, June 5: The Institution of Engineers (India), Jamshedpur Local Centre, celebrated World Environment Day with great fervour and commitment.

The event, held on the morning of 5th June 2024, was graced by  B K Das, Past Chairman of the centre and Ex-Vice President of the Iron Making Division at Tata Steel Ltd Jamshedpur, who served as the Chief Guest.

Tree plantation ceremony

The celebration began with a tree plantation ceremony, where dignitaries planted several trees on the institution’s campus, symbolizing their commitment to a greener future.

The event then proceeded to the conference hall, where  Satish Kumar Tiwary, Chairman of the centre and Chief of Mechanical Maintenance at Tata Steel Ltd, extended a warm welcome to the Chief Guest and other members present.

Satish Kumar Tiwary highlighted the long-standing tradition of the Institution of Engineers in celebrating World Environment Day, each year aligning with a theme set by the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Chief Guest urges action on ‘Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience’

This year’s theme, “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” was emphasized by the Chief Guest,  B K Das, who discussed its critical importance and the dire consequences of inaction.

Das elaborated on the significance of the theme, stressing that land restoration is vital for enhancing biodiversity, improving soil fertility, and increasing water retention. These efforts are crucial for mitigating the effects of drought and desertification.

He also highlighted the importance of managing solid waste and water generation within industries, noting their significant impact on human health.

The Chief Guest outlined that land restoration activities often involve reforestation, sustainable agricultural practices, and the revival of natural water sources.

He urged the Institution of Engineers, Jamshedpur Local Centre, to actively engage in accelerating land restoration, enhancing drought resilience, and combating desertification as part of their contributions to this year’s World Environment Day.
