Jharkhand News: IIT ISM Dhanbad begins capacity building programme for tribal school students

Dhanbad, July 2: The capacity building programme for tribal school students of Jharkhand began at IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad today.

Over 1500 class X, XI and XII tribal students of seven Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) of the state including EMRS Ranchi, EMRS Kathijoria (Jamtara), EMRS Godda, EMRS Lohardaga, EMRS Dumka, EMRS West Singhbhum and EMRS Bhagadih ( Koderma) are attending courses.

The IIT ISM Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Tribal Development is conducting an online programme in which students are being imparted basic level information technology and computer training.

Coordinator of the programme Rashmi Singh, assistant professor, Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering said that the capacity building and skill development course has been launched for the tribal students of Jharkhand to boost their employment, income, livelihood and economic well-being.

Prof JK Pattanayak, Prof Sandip Mandal, and Prof Niladri Das were also present at the inaugural function.

“The programme will be conducted online and in hybrid mode. The total duration of the course will be one year and divided into two semesters of 13 weeks each. Reading material will be in Hindi and delivered to the students at the start of the programme,” said Prof Singh, who is principal investigator of the project.

Reading materials in Santhali language

She said that reading materials in the Santhali language, which is the dominant tribal language in the EMRS schools, will be kept in the school library for the reference of the students.

“There will be two theory classes and four practical/hands-on sessions to be delivered to the students by the Institute experts. Assignments will be given to the students every week to test their understanding of the course,” Prof Singh said.

The institute experts will visit the EMRS schools in physical mode to conduct problem-solving sessions. Regular feedback will be taken from the students to understand their learning from the program & challenges associated with it. The feedback will also be obtained from the principal, class- teacher and computer/ICT teacher of the EMRS schools.
