Dhanbad, July 11: The faculty members of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) on Thursday carried out a plantation drive under the ambitious drive of ‘Ek Per Maa Ke Naam’ on the campus.

The drive was carried out at Rosaline Hostel using the Matka plantation recharge technique in which Neem saplings were planted.

On the occasion, Prof Alok Sinha, department head of environmental science & engineering, Prof Anshumali and horticulturist Dhiraj Kumar gave details of the advantages of drive to the students and research scholars.

Explaining the advantages of the Matka Plantation method over the regular plantation method, the faculty members said that in this technique water is filled in earthen pots and buried in the ground near the roots of trees and plants by making a hole in the pot through which water drips drop by drop and goes to the roots of the plants.

Prof Anshumali said that the Matka plantation recharge technique is a nature-based solution to environmental problems especially the restoration of mined-out areas, river fronts, degraded forest lands, hilly terrains and agroforestry in the Rainfed areas.

The official said the aim of the plantation drive being organized by the Horticulture section of the Institute in association with EIACP (PC-RP), Department of Environmental Science & Engineering is to create awareness and spread the message of saving our planet.

Large Scale plantation on July 13

Horticulturist Dhiraj Kumar said that over 1000 plants of Pipal, Neem, Teak, Mango, Palash, Jamun, and Mahua were to be planted in a special drive at the Nirsa campus of IIT ISM on July 13.

Around 400 saplings would be planted using the Matka Plantation Recharge Technique. Prof Sukumar Mishra, director, deputy director Prof Dhiraj Kumar, Deans, HoDs and other faculty members, officers and staff will be present.
