Ranchi, Sept 9: Junior resident doctors (non-academic) of Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) Ranchi today returned to their duty in the morning after the administration accepted all their demands for instilling a sense of safety in the hospital.
Non-academic junior resident doctors had on Sunday morning gone on a pen-down strike after a junior lady doctor was harassed by an assaulter in the lift while going to the oncology department. The perpetrator was duly caught on the spot.
“The Junior Doctors Association (JDA) had four demands, including a guard in each lift, allowing only one attendant to one patient; posting two guards in each ward and increasing the number of security guards in the hospital. At the meeting, concerned authorities accepted all four points. So, junior residents non-academic today returned to work,” said Dr Abhishek Hansdak, vice president of the JDA.

JDA not satisfied with security arrangement
Dr Hansdak said that the JDA is not satisfied with available security arrangements for doctors in the hospital. The matter is very serious but, at the same time, he said that a pen-down strike is not a solution to every problem. “We would again hold a meeting with hospital authorities for a permanent solution to safety issues,” he added.
JDA office-bearers said that they had gone on an agitation path in protest against RG Kar Medical College Hospital Kolkata trainee doctor’s rape and murder. “However, security arrangements in RIMS have not improved. Even after that first, unruly home guards personnel thrashed MBBS students in the evening of August 14 and secondly on September 8 a junior resident was harassed.
“However, the process of reshuffling the accused home guards is under progress and the JDA hopes doctors will get a safe environment on the campus,” said Dr Hansdak.
