New Delhi, March 17: Justice Joymalya Bagchi took the oath as a judge of the Supreme Court on Monday, with Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna administering the oath in a full court ceremony.

His appointment leaves just one vacancy in the 34-judge bench of the apex court.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Bagchi’s elevation on March 6, a proposal that received the Central government’s approval on March 10.

The Collegium, in its resolution, highlighted that Justice Bagchi is in line to become the Chief Justice of India until his retirement on October 2, 2031. His tenure in the apex court will span over six years before assuming the CJI’s office.

Justice Bagchi previously served as a judge in the Calcutta High Court before his elevation to the Supreme Court.

Justice Bagchi’s judicial career began with his appointment to the Calcutta High Court on June 27, 2011. He was later transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on January 4, 2021, before being repatriated to the Calcutta High Court on November 8, 2021.
