National seminar on smart manufacturing concludes at BIT Sindri

Dhanbad, May 9: The five-day national seminar on “Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing: Industry 4.0 and Beyond”, organized by the Department of Production and Industrial Engineering at BIT Sindri, concluded on Friday with insightful sessions and active participation from researchers, scientists, and industry professionals.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Prakash Kumar, Head of the Department of Production and Industrial Engineering and chief organizer, said the objective of the seminar was to promote advancements in modern manufacturing technologies, automation, digitalization, and environmental sustainability.

He emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration between the academic and industrial sectors to support innovation and sustainable growth.

Experts Highlight Advances in Additive Manufacturing and Supply Chain Digitalization

On the final day, two technical sessions were held. The first featured Dr. Shitanshu Shekhar Chakravarty, Senior Scientist at the Additive Manufacturing Research Group, CSIR-CMERI Durgapur.

He delivered a lecture on “Laser-Based Additive Manufacturing of Metallic Components – Current Status and Ongoing Research.” Dr. Chakravarty detailed how laser-based 3D printing is transforming manufacturing practices and contributing to sustainability through innovation in metallic component production.

In the second session, Dr. Alok Raj, Associate Professor at XLRI Jamshedpur, spoke on “Digitalization of Supply Chain for Industry 4.0.” He discussed the role of digitalization in enhancing supply chain efficiency, transparency, and agility, while also addressing the challenges industries face during implementation.

Industry Participation and Valedictory Address

The valedictory session was graced by Sanjeev Kumar Singh, General Manager, SAIL-ISP Chasnala, as the chief guest. He praised the seminar’s organizers, stating that the event reflected the evolving future of the manufacturing industry. He also commended the relevance of the topics discussed and the collaboration between academia and industry leaders.

Prof. Prakash Kumar expressed satisfaction over the successful execution of the event, noting that all five days were rich in technical discussions, innovation sharing, and valuable insights into research and industrial growth.

Participants were awarded certificates of appreciation and accolades for their research papers. Mementoes were also presented to the invited speakers as a token of gratitude.

The closing ceremony concluded with Dr. Suman Mukherjee, seminar coordinator, and Prof. Prakash Kumar thanking all contributors for making the seminar a meaningful and productive experience.
