Jamshedpur, August 29: A youth was beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of theft in Chhaya Nagar under Sitaramdera police station late Thursday night.

The deceased has been identified as Rahul Bhuiyan, a cart-puller by profession. The incident has triggered tension in the locality.

According to police sources, the incident occurred around 1:30 am when Rahul had stepped out of his house to relieve himself.

At that time, Shivam Sharma, a local resident, along with four to five associates, allegedly mistook him for a thief. The group brutally assaulted Rahul with iron rods and sticks.

He was rushed to MGM Hospital in a critical condition, but doctors declared him dead around 4 am on Friday.

As news of his death spread, family members and local residents gathered at MGM Hospital on Friday morning and staged a protest, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.

The situation turned tense, prompting Sitaramdera police station in-charge Niranjan Kumar to rush to the spot with additional forces. The main accused, Shivam Sharma, was subsequently arrested and taken into custody.
