Ranchi, Oct 1: The Jharkhand government has appointed senior IAS officer (retired) Alka Tiwari as the new State Election Commissioner. Her tenure will be for four years from the date she assumes office, though it will conclude earlier if she attains the age of 65 before the end of the term.

The government issued a notification regarding her appointment on Wednesday evening. Tiwari, a 1988-batch IAS officer, retired as Chief Secretary on September 30. With the approval of the Election Commission during the 2024 Assembly elections, the state government had appointed her as Chief Secretary in November 2024.
It is significant to note that Chief Minister Hemant Soren had announced her new role as State Election Commissioner during her farewell ceremony on September 30. Interestingly, the post was earlier held by her husband, DK Tiwari, who also served as State Election Commissioner after his retirement as chief secretary.
