Daltonganj, December 24: A postgraduate (PG) first-semester girl student of the History subject has rocked the Nilamber Pitamber University (NPU).

On Tuesday, this girl student tried to harm herself. She hurt the veins in one of her hands by herself. It was a case of self-harm infliction.

Allegations against History teacher

She hurt her veins. She bled. The cause of provocation was unheard of. She claimed to have inflicted self-injury in reaction to her PG classes in History not being taken regularly by a lady teacher of History in Yodh Singh Namdhari Mahila College in Daltonganj.

She had a few more complaints about the said History lady teacher other than irregular classes or classes not held but fictitious attendance readied by the concerned History lady teacher to prove her engagement of classes.

Her other complaint was the lady teacher’s scolding and threatening to fail in the examination. This girl student further maintained that the said lady teacher is rude to students.

Police intervention and SP’s account

It was SP Reeshma Ramesan’s swift intervention that took the girl out of her shock and depression and helped retained the confidence of this girl student.

Talking to the Jharkhand Story Network correspondent SP said, “Between 1.30 and 2 pm Tuesday, I got a phone call from a male caller informing me about a girl in distress and with injury around the Daltonganj railway station.”

“The caller spoke about harassment meted out to the girl, and that at once made me alert my Mahila Thana following the harassment issue. I directed the officer in charge of the Mahila Thana to swing into action. She did,” added the SP.

Reeshma Ramesan said,” By then, two mediapersons had descended on the scene and helped the girl bandaged for the wound inflicted by self.”

The Mahila Thana police presented this girl before the SP later in the day on Tuesday.

“The girl looked studious. She was in a low mood too. She talked about her History lady teacher, accusing the lady teacher of bunking classes, scolding and rebuking students and threatening to fail in the exams,” added the SP, referring to the versions of the girl student.

The girl student complained that her History lady teacher hardly dispels doubts and, in return, looks down upon the students, said the SP, quoting the girl student.

Police have taken this matter recorded in the station diary and beyond this, it’s the university, the concerned college and the teacher to find out what the mess is and why this girl resorted to self-harming, reiterated the SP.

University VC assures action

On the other hand, the VC of the Nilamber Pitamber University (NPU) Dr Prof Dinesh Kumar Singh said, “The DSW and the proctor have been directed to take this matter seriously.”

Asked that this girl had met you and handed over her complaint in writing, and now the girl accuses the university of taking her complaints quite lightly or non-seriously, to which the VC said,” This is not fair to say the university has shelved down her complaint. It is strange that a postgraduate student resorted to such a thing. The university is very keen to reach the bottom of the case.”

About the lady History teacher not taking classes, the VC said the concerned professor in charge of the college is to submit a report on her.

However, the VC said the lady History teacher is said to be a regular teacher and a disciplinarian too.

The parents of the girl have taken her back home in Chiyanki.

Police too have not registered this case as any FIR, believing the university to take effective measures to settle such eruptions of anger of the student, all for regular classes.

The Daltonganj railway officials denied that this girl harmed by self was ever in and around the Daltonganj railway station. RPF’s CCTV footage too had no clue of this girl.

It would be in a fitness of things to check her Tuesday incoming and outgoing calls, along with the messages and WhatsApp chats.

There are some questions whose answers are to be found.

  1. Did the girl do this self-harming under any abetment of others?
  2. Who was the male caller who first tipped off the SP about a girl in self-inflicted injury?
  3. Was the caller any acquaintance of the girl?
  4. Was this sad incident any desperate attempt to highlight the plights of the sincere and dedicated students just for the basic ‘Hold classes’?
  5. The Nilamber Pitamber University must feel ashamed of a girl student resorting to harming herself just for classes to run properly and regularly.
  6. What measures should the university take to improve the regularity of the classes, as classes are not a regular phenomenon here in this university.

The VC said, “I am determined to improve the conduct of the classes. Things will improve soon.”
