Ranchi, June 16: Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Tuesday called for a stronger partnership between the government and farmers to transform Jharkhand’s agricultural sector, saying the state’s future prosperity depends on shared responsibility, sustainable farming practices and the adoption of modern technology.

Addressing the inaugural session of the Jharkhand Agricultural Produce and Trade Fair 2026 at Morhabadi Ground, Soren said the government alone cannot bring about change and farmers must actively participate in the state’s agricultural transformation.

“The government will shoulder half the responsibility while farmers must bear the other half. If both work together, the farmers of Jharkhand cannot be defeated,” he said.

Financial Assistance and Recognition for Farmers
During the event, Soren provided 100 per cent grant-funded financial assistance to Tana Bhagat families for constructing sheds for four milch animals. He also honoured progressive farmers with certificates, distributed appointment letters to veterinarians and attendants appointed in district agriculture offices, and handed over Digital AI Kits to 209 beneficiaries.

The Chief Minister said the state government is continuously working to strengthen the rural economy and increase farmers’ income through targeted welfare schemes and technological interventions.
Climate Change and Water Security in Focus
Highlighting the challenges facing agriculture, Soren expressed concern over the impact of climate change and the growing pressure on water resources. He warned that indiscriminate extraction of groundwater could create a serious crisis in the future if adequate conservation measures are not adopted.
“Every drop of water taken from the earth must be replenished. Water harvesting and storage should become an integral part of farming. This will not only help farmers today but also benefit future generations,” he said.
The Chief Minister urged farmers to adopt modern agricultural techniques that can help increase productivity while reducing water consumption.

Call for Balance Between Development and Nature
Soren emphasised the need to maintain a balance between development and environmental conservation.
He said rapid urbanisation and infrastructure expansion were leading to large-scale destruction of forests, while afforestation efforts were failing to keep pace.
“A balance between nature and development activities is essential. Agriculture, livestock and human life all depend on water, greenery and ecological stability,” he said.
The Chief Minister stressed that public participation would be crucial in preserving natural resources while pursuing economic growth.
Push for Organic Farming
Soren urged farmers to reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers and harmful agricultural inputs and instead focus on organic farming.
He said excessive use of chemicals affects soil quality, public health and the long-term sustainability of agriculture.
“Farmers should avoid practices that compromise health and the environment. Organic farming can help improve both farm incomes and food quality,” he said.
Birsa Harit Gram Yojana Yields Results
Highlighting the success of the Birsa Harit Gram Yojana, Soren said fruit-bearing plantations developed on nearly 1.5 lakh acres of barren land are now generating tangible results.
He cited the example of women associated with JSLPS in Simdega whose mangoes are being exported to London, calling it evidence of how government support and farmers’ efforts can create global opportunities.
“This demonstrates that with the right support and hard work, Jharkhand’s farmers can compete in international markets,” he said.
Progressive Farmers to Get Special Recognition
To encourage innovation and adoption of modern farming practices, the Chief Minister announced that progressive farmers across the state would be identified and honoured under the proposed Chief Minister’s Honour programme.
He also directed officials to provide deserving farmers with financial assistance and technical tools to enhance productivity.
Dedicated Digital Portal Planned
The Chief Minister instructed the Agriculture Department to develop a dedicated digital platform where farmers can submit queries, suggestions and grievances and receive timely responses from experts and government officials.
He said technology must play a greater role in making agriculture more efficient, productive and profitable.
Agricultural Fair Showcases Innovation
The three-day Jharkhand Agricultural Produce and Trade Fair 2026, being held from June 16 to 18 at Morhabadi Ground, features around 200 stalls showcasing agricultural innovations, modern technologies and government schemes.
The event has brought together progressive farmers from across Jharkhand, agricultural scientists and experts from different parts of the country to exchange ideas and promote best practices in farming.
Among those present were Ministers Dr. Irfan Ansari, Deepika Pandey Singh and Shilpi Neha Tirkey, Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji, MLA Suresh Kumar Baitha, Birsa Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Dr. S.C. Dubey, Agriculture Secretary Abu Bakr Siddique, and other senior officials.
