Dhanbad, May 26: The BIT Sindri administration has imposed fines ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 on 21 students found involved in a violent clash that broke out on campus on the night of May 12.

The action follows the submission of a report by a five-member high-level inquiry committee headed by senior professor and General Warden Dr. R.K. Verma. The identified students belong to the first, second, and final years of study.

Over ₹10 Lakh Worth of Property Damaged

According to Dr. Verma, property worth more than ₹10 lakh was damaged during the altercation. The penalties imposed are aimed at recovering a portion of this loss. “The administration has levied fines on the students responsible for the sabotage to cover the extensive damages,” said Dr. Verma.

Clash Sparked After Fresher’s Event Turns Violent

The incident reportedly began after the conclusion of the first-year Fresher Course function on May 12. Allegedly, a first-year student, with the help of outsiders, assaulted a third-year student at the institute’s game zone.

In retaliation, a group of third-year students stormed the first-year hostel later that night, assaulting students and causing widespread damage.

The situation could have escalated further had it not been for the swift intervention of Director Dr. Pankaj Rai, CDC Chairman Dr. Ghanshyam, General Warden Dr. Verma, and other senior faculty members. Their timely presence on campus helped avoid a more serious incident.

Probe Reveals Involvement of Senior Students Too

Initially, the clash was believed to involve only first- and third-year students. However, the investigation revealed that second- and fourth-year students were also participants in the violence.

Following the violence, the administration evacuated all first-year students from their hostel in the early hours of May 13 and declared the beginning of the summer vacation.

An FIR was also lodged at Goshala police station against the involved students, and a formal inquiry committee was established to investigate the matter further.
