THE JHARKHAND STORY NETWORK
Ranchi, June 25: Delhi Public School Ranchi, in collaboration with Child in Need Institute (CINI) and with support from Jharkhand Education Project Council, Ranchi, organised a comprehensive awareness program on the ill effects of substance abuse and intoxication.

The event served as a platform to educate students about the psychological, social, and neurological consequences of drug misuse and the importance of making informed life choices.

The session featured valuable insights from Subhadeep Adhikary, who brings over 14 years of experience in the development sector. He currently leads the Child Protection Portfolio at CINI – Jharkhand Unit and holds a postgraduate degree in Social Work. Adhikary has played a pivotal role in advancing education and child protection initiatives across India, contributing significantly to policy and grassroots implementation.

Joining him was Sangeeta, a Mental Health Professional (Psychiatric Social Worker) and PhD Research Scholar at the Ranchi Institute of Neuropsychiatry and Allied Sciences (RINPAS). She provided an in-depth perspective on mental health challenges faced by both children and adults. Her current research delves into the perceptions and experiences of transgender individuals regarding access to and quality of mental health services.

The event commenced with a resonant skit titled “Nasha Chhodo, Jeevan Apnao”, performed by children from the slum area of Ward No. 28, Madhukam. Their depiction of the destructive path of addiction and the importance of choosing a life of purpose left the audience deeply moved.
A quiz session followed, testing and enhancing students’ knowledge on substance abuse. The interactive format fostered participation and reinforced key facts about drug misuse. To further underscore the message, a documentary was screened featuring real-life stories of addiction and recovery. The visual storytelling made a lasting impression on students, evoking empathy and increasing awareness.
An interactive session allowed students to voice their thoughts and seek clarification. A significant discussion emerged around the misuse of prescribed medications like cough syrups — how such seemingly harmless drugs, when used improperly, can lead to addiction. The experts explained the fine line between medical necessity and abuse, emphasizing the need for vigilance and awareness.

The experts also encouraged students to embrace the opportunities that modern life presents, using their access to technology and information for positive growth rather than destructive habits. They stressed that moral judgment often leads to stigma, and instead, students should take a practical approach, seek help when needed, and talk to trusted adults.
The audience was briefed on the neurological and psychological effects of substance abuse and how it can negatively impact their academic, financial, and social futures. A list of helpline numbers and support networks was provided for students in need.

The event concluded on a strong note as all students and faculty took a collective pledge to abstain from intoxicants and actively promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle within their communities.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Jaya Chauhan, Principal of DPS Ranchi, said, “Education is not just about academic excellence—it is about building responsible citizens who can make wise choices. At DPS Ranchi, we are committed to nurturing not only minds but also hearts. This awareness program is a reminder that every child has the power to say no to substance abuse and yes to life. Together, we must empower our students to be change-makers in their own lives and in society.”
