Dhanbad, June 8: Three-day chemistry solving residential camp, the first of its kind for class IX government schools students, began at IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad.

Altogether 77 class IX students of 15 government schools are attending the residential camp organized by the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology IIT ISM under the aegis of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
An official said the residential camp is part of the Yusuf Hamied Inspirational Science Programme aimed at developing awareness and interest of students in chemistry through practical activities in university labs, and chemical demonstrations.
IIT ISM director Prof Sukumar Mishra while inaugurating the camp at the Golden Jubilee Lecture Theatre of the institute, called upon the participant students to take advantage of the residential camp, and gain knowledge about chemistry and the multitude of opportunities available in the field.
He advised the students of government schools not to hesitate to ask questions to research scholars or faculty members in the camp to gain knowledge.

“I have seen many students overthinking before asking questions presuming that others will laugh at his question. But, you should not hesitate even if somebody laughs as you have to gain knowledge by asking questions,” said Prof Mishra.
Role of chemistry in nation-building.
Earlier in the inaugural function, Prof Parthsarthi Das, HoD Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology welcomed the students and apprised them about the career options in chemistry and chemical biology. He said chemistry has an important role in nation-building.
“After attending the residential camp all of you will turn to our brand ambassador and will share the knowledge among fellow students of schools, neighbours and others in the society,” said Prof Das.
Inspirational Science Programme of Yusuf Hamied
Melisha Mendonza, programme executive of the Royal Society of Chemistry, on the occasion, informed the participant students in detail about the Royal Society of Chemistry as well as the Inspirational Science Programme of Yusuf Hamied, chairman of Cipla, a generic pharmaceutical company.
