Jamshedpur, May 16: A 23-year-old newly married woman, Rita Kumari Mahato, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her home at Kagalnagar in Sonari, on Thursday—just 17 days after her wedding to Chandan Mahato on April 29.

Rita was discovered hanging in her room. Her family rushed her to Tata Main Hospital (TMH), where doctors declared her as brought dead. The incident has ignited serious allegations between her maternal family and in-laws.

Family Alleges Dowry-Driven Murder

Rita’s brother, Shambhu Mahato, has filed a complaint accusing her husband, mother-in-law, and father-in-law of torturing her for dowry and murdering her.

He claimed the in-laws had demanded a motorcycle, and when the demand wasn’t met, they killed Rita and staged the scene as a suicide.

Husband Says She Was Hiding Things From Him

Chandan Mahato, the husband, refuted the dowry claims and said Rita had been hiding things from him.

He alleged that on the day of the incident, he found old photos of her with a former boss on her phone, which led to an argument. He left for work, and later received a call from his mother informing him that Rita had taken her own life.

Chandan maintains that the only mention of a motorcycle was a casual request to replace an old one, not a dowry demand.

FIR Filed, Post-Mortem Report Awaited

Police have registered an FIR against three members of the in-law’s family under charges of dowry harassment and murder.

The post-mortem was conducted on Friday, and the police are awaiting the report to confirm the exact cause of death. Further investigations are underway.
