Jamshedpur, Oct 8: West Singhbhum police today arrested former Deputy Postmaster Vikas Chandra Kulila (46), posted at the Gua Railway Market Post Office, on charges of embezzling over Rs 50 lakh from depositors’ savings accounts and splurging the amount on gambling, both online and offline.

The fraudulent withdrawals were carried out between February 1, 2023, and June 19, 2025, amounting to a total of Rs 50,56,473.

A formal complaint was lodged by Postal Inspector Suman Kumar Samta, following which a case was registered at Gua Police Station (Case No. 34/2025).

During the investigation, it was revealed that Kulila had siphoned off the funds and lost lakhs of rupees on online gambling platforms such as Delta Exchange and Dhoom 999 Casino.

He also reportedly squandered significant amounts at local gambling hubs, including ‘Murga Pada’.

Scrutiny of his SBI and postal savings accounts confirmed large-scale suspicious transactions.

Acting on the instructions of the West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police, a special team led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Kiriburu) Ajay Kerketta conducted a raid at Kulila’s residence in Tungri.

He was arrested in the presence of his wife and two independent witnesses. Police also seized an Oppo Android mobile phone from his possession.

During interrogation, Kulila confessed to the crime.

Sources said he belonged to a respectable family but fell into bad company in Gua, where exposure to gamblers and addicts led him astray, ultimately pushing him into a spiral of financial fraud and addiction.
