Jamshedpur, July 24: A late-night outing turned tragic after two junior doctors from MGM Medical College and Hospital drowned in a restricted pond near Dimna Lake in Jamshedpur in the early hours of Friday while reportedly attempting to retrieve a mobile phone that had fallen into the water.
The deceased have been identified as Sameer and Saksham, while their companion, Yash, survived by swimming to safety.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the MGM Medical College and Hospital community, with doctors, junior residents and medical students rushing to the spot after learning of the tragedy.
Attempt to retrieve phone ends in tragedy
According to preliminary information, the three junior doctors had reached the Dimna area late on Thursday night and were sitting beside the pond when one of their mobile phones accidentally slipped into the deep water.

One of the doctors entered the pond to retrieve the phone but soon began drowning due to the unexpected depth and strong current. Another doctor immediately jumped in to rescue him but was also swept under.
Seeing both of his colleagues struggling, Yash also entered the water. A trained swimmer, he managed to reach the shore safely but was unable to rescue Sameer and Saksham.
He immediately alerted fellow doctors and informed the police.
Search operation hampered by heavy rain
Personnel from Bodam Police Station rushed to the spot and launched a search operation with the help of local divers.
However, continuous rainfall, rising water levels and strong currents initially hampered rescue efforts.
Police recovered the slippers of the two missing doctors from the site and questioned the surviving doctor to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Pond declared a danger zone
Police officials said the pond had already been declared a danger zone, with warning boards prohibiting public entry because of its depth and hazardous conditions.
Despite these restrictions, the three doctors reportedly entered the area late at night, leading to the tragedy.
Sources said one of the deceased doctors was scheduled to report for emergency duty at MGM Hospital in the early hours of Friday.
The incident has plunged the hospital into mourning, with colleagues and students expressing grief over the untimely loss of two young medical professionals.
Rising water levels complicate rescue efforts
Officials said the ongoing spell of heavy rain has significantly raised the water level in the nearby Dimna Dam. The opening of one of the dam’s gates to regulate the reservoir further increased the depth and flow of water in the adjoining pond, making rescue operations more challenging.
Divers have been facing considerable difficulty in locating the bodies because of the strong currents.
Police have continued the search operation while simultaneously investigating the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
