Dhanbad, Oct 23: In the wake of the tragic incident at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Junior Doctors’ Network (JDN) has initiated a mental health helpline to support junior doctors and medical students facing psychological challenges.

This response follows the shocking death of Dr Akash Bhengra, a PG second-year student in the orthopaedics department.

Dr Akash Bhengra, a second-year postgraduate student in the orthopaedics department, was found in critical condition near Hostel No. 4 late on Sunday evening and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries during treatment at the hospital.

Call for mental health awareness

Dr Sushil Kumar, chairman of the IMA JDN state body, expressed profound sorrow over Dr Bhengra’s passing. He emphasized that the incident appears to stem from psychological issues that require immediate attention.

In his appeal to junior doctors, he acknowledged the immense pressure they face from various visible and invisible sources, stating, “It is our (JDN) responsibility to address such issues.”

Support for junior doctors

Dr Kumar urged junior doctors in the state to reach out for support, highlighting the importance of mental health within the medical community.

“We need you (junior doctors of the state) and can’t afford to lose anyone from our fraternity any further. We are just a phone call away. Talk with us or drop a message if any of you is in mental turmoil. Give us an opportunity; we are there for you,” he reassured.

Addressing the aftermath

Dr Kumar reflected on the profound impact that Dr Bhengra’s tragic death has had on the medical fraternity and his family.

He stated, “The shock that the medical fraternity and Dr Bhengra’s family have received from this tragic death can’t be imagined. But now we have to check it at all levels and hope the ‘Mental Helpline’ will help in addressing this issue.”
