Dhanbad, March 12: Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) in Dhanbad is set to introduce a Day Care Medical Unit, allowing patients to receive treatment without prolonged hospital stays.

The initiative aims to enhance medical services by providing quality treatment within 24 hours, ensuring faster recovery and reduced patient congestion.

Newly appointed hospital Superintendent Dr. Dinesh Kumar Gindoria emphasized his commitment to transforming SNMMCH into one of the state’s top healthcare centers. “My priority is to provide the best possible treatment using available resources. Setting up the Day Care Treatment Unit is a key step towards this goal,” he stated.

Day Care Treatment to Reduce Patient Overcrowding

The Day Care Treatment Unit will cater to procedures, surgeries, and medical treatments that do not require extended hospital stays. Patients will be discharged within a day, significantly reducing the burden on existing hospital beds.

SNMMCH will be the first among six medical education institutions in Jharkhand to implement this innovative treatment model.

Dr. Gindoria further outlined his plans to improve healthcare services, including strengthening emergency facilities, maintaining ward cleanliness, and establishing a super-specialty unit.

“Besides improving the quality of treatment, my focus is on emergency services and cleanliness. The super-specialty unit will further enhance patient care,” he added.

Space Constraints and Overcrowding Challenges

During their visit to SNMMCH on January 17, Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari and Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Health Ajay Kumar Singh had announced plans to develop the hospital into a super-specialty center.

Dr. Gindoria acknowledged that overcrowding in OPD and wards remains a major challenge, with patient numbers exceeding available facilities.

Hospital records indicate that 1,500 to 1,600 patients visit the OPD daily, including referrals from Dhanbad, Giridih, and the Santhal Pargana division (Jamtara, Dumka, and Godda). With all 570 hospital beds frequently occupied, some patients are forced to stay in hospital corridors due to a lack of space.

Efforts to Expand Facilities and Improve Patient Care

Dr. Gindoria is actively exploring options to accommodate additional beds to address the rising patient load. He believes that the Day Care Treatment Unit will play a crucial role in reducing overcrowding by providing timely medical intervention and freeing up hospital resources for more critical cases.

“This issue is already on my radar, and I am looking for additional space to set up more beds. The Day Care Treatment Unit will also help us manage patient flow more effectively and ensure prompt medical care,” he assured.
