Chennai, March 17: The Central government has approved India’s ambitious Chandrayaan-5 mission for lunar study by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan shared this information, confirming that the government has granted approval for the Chandrayaan-5 mission, which will focus on studying the Moon.

Speaking at an ISRO event, Narayanan mentioned that while the Chandrayaan-3 mission had deployed the 25 kg Prayagyaan rover on the lunar surface, the Chandrayaan-5 mission will land a significantly larger 250 kg rover on the Moon.

The Chandrayaan missions focus on studying the Moon’s surface. Chandrayaan-1, launched in 2008, successfully detected chemicals and minerals on the lunar surface and conducted geostationary mapping of the Moon.

Chandrayaan-2 achieved 98% of its objectives, while Chandrayaan-3 successfully landed on the Moon and is gathering surface data through its rover.

Meanwhile, the high-resolution camera sent as part of the Chandrayaan-2 mission continues to capture and transmit hundreds of images of the Moon.
