Daltonganj, October 15: A medical treatise on urinary tract infection among girls and women was held in the Yodh Singh Namdhari Mahila (YSNM) College on Tuesday wherein city’s top urology surgeon Dr Sanjay Kumar not only took questions of college girls about urinary tract infection but suggested ways and means for avoiding such infection.
A rare programme ever held in a girl’s college in Palamu in these four or five decades, the Yodh Singh Namdhari Mahila College deserves all credit for having it.
Although the Vice Chancellor of the Nilamber Pitamber University (NPU) Dr Prof Dinesh Kumar Singh was to preside over this session of the medical treatise on urinary tract infection awareness, the VC had to push off for some urgent meetings in the university.

The professor in charge Dr Mohini Gupta and her team later oversaw the programme.

Free and Frank Conversations on Women’s Health
Girls asked questions in a very free and frank manner. One girl asked as to why females are more prone to this infection to which Dr Sanjay Kumar said females have shorter urethra and hence there is more proneness to infection.
Another query: Urgent and urgency of urination is a discomfort to females as unlike men, females can’t have such freedom to ease themselves.
Dr Sanjay Kumar said, “The urge in continuance of urination takes over a person, more a big discomfiture to females.”
There came a question about bed wetting.
On how to wash oneself after the urination, Dr Sanjay Kumar said, “I tell you my journalist friend very frankly that I was getting embarrassed to explain as to how to wash oneself after voiding urine.”
“I am thankful to a lady teacher who was bold enough to explain this issue with more frankness and openness than me as this lady teacher said she had a bout of urinary tract infection and then she went on to say how she used to wash herself after voiding urine,” he said.
“This lady teacher said the washing should be from front to back and not from back to front. I concede I wouldn’t have been so free to share this as this lady teacher did. She deserves our high appreciation,” added Dr Sanjay Kumar.

Menstrual Hygiene and Precautions Explained
Queried if he asked for precautions to be taken before and after having sex, to which Dr Sanjay Kumar said, “I did tell them. It’s always preferable to have a void urine before and after sex.”
“Girls are pretty conscious of menstrual hygiene. They know well. The problem is with those girls having maiden such episode. Most of them hide this episode from their mothers when they ought to share it with them. Puberty is a period of physical changes and hormonal shifts. It is to be understood calmly and scientifically,” opined Dr Sanjay Kumar.
The medical interactive session was a tremendous success, said sources in the college.
Vice Chancellor Dr Prof Dinesh Kumar Singh told this correspondent, “The university would be prompting its colleges to have such an interface and interactive session of their students with professionals in different genres to enable them to know about their health and attitude towards life.”
