Daltonganj, Dec 19: Medininagar Municipal Corporation today gave away jackets to beat the cold to its around 300 workforce which includes Supervisors, Safai Mitrs (sanitation workers), tube well repair gang men, drivers, and peons.

The jackets are of good quality and enough to keep Safai Mitrs warm who are out in the foggy morning to keep the town neat and clean. It’s not fluffy as fluffy jackets wear out fast.

The jackets have come as a big surprise for the workforce in the outgoing year 2024.

Never in the past, this workforce was ever given winter warmer at all. It’s for the first time that they will be putting on jackets which if their upkeep is maintained will last for 2 or three more winters.

The Jharkhand Story correspondent spoke to a few recipients of the jackets as to how they will be washing it once the winter is over and summer comes in to which the stock-in-trade reply was, “We will wash it in the river water with the available soap.”

City Commissioner’s acknowledges contributions of Safai Mitrs

City Commissioner Md Jawed Hussain gave away the jackets. He gave a brief speech. The crux of his speech was, “If the town is neat and clean no one will remember the Safai Mitrs. But when the town is dirty and full of filth our Safai Mitrs are remembered the wrong way. So appreciation is less in your quota but we express our thanks and gratitude to all of you as you work in the most odd and difficult situation.”

“You work when it rains. You are at work where there is severe inundation. You are there always. We all hold you people high,” said the City Commissioner in a tone charged with gratitude to them.

Jawed said, “We are mooting a plan to hold a health camp for our Safai Mitrs and others. We will be exploring how to cover them with the Ayushman Card etc. I understand the Safai Mitrs must know what they should do to keep them fit.”

A quality-conscious City Commissioner randomly picked up one jacket and tried his hands on its zip. The zip was all right and not at all malfunctioning.

It’s around 900 rupees per jacket said the city mission manager Satish Kumar.

Medininagar Municipal Corporation has a fairly large number of female Safai Mitrs and so it decided to go for the jacket irrespective of gender as trousers for the female workforce would not have been any suitable, added Satish Kumar. It’s jacket for both genders.
