Daltonganj, Sept 28: A THR (total hip replacement) surgery was successfully performed at the Medinirai Medical College Hospital in Daltonganj on Thursday evening by a team of three orthopaedic surgeons, two anaesthetists and half a dozen OT (operation theatre) assistants.
“The THR is the first of its kind in the MMCH Daltonganj since its upgradation from Sadar Hospital to MMCH way back in 2019,” said Dr Anil Kumar who is the Palamu Civil Surgeon and the head of the team which conducted THR.
Dr Anil Kumar said, “I remember there had never been any THR here when this was a Sadar Hospital being as old as more than 125 years or so.”
The THR surgery was a combined effort of the team of the famed orthopaedic plastic surgeon Dr Pravin Siddharth of this hospital and his team of a couple of OT-trained assistants.
Dr Siddharth told this correspondent late Thursday, September 26 night ” Sterilisation was done by us in a state-of-the-art autoclave. I had to work it out for a couple of days.”
The THR surgery lasted for a little over one hour said Dr Anil Kumar. The THR was under the Ayushman card he reminded.

The cost of the THR is around 95,000 or so. It will be met with the provisions of the Ayushman.
The patient, a poor woman, Chanarmani Devi, 55, of village Pathak Pagar under the Pipra Tarn police station was first equipped with the Ayushman card.
Dr Anil Kumar said, “The patient was in pain and she had no money. We first got her Ayushman card in a record time of two weeks.”
Implants brought from Ranchi
All the implants here in this case ‘set of total hip replacement’ were brought from Ranchi, said the Civil Surgeon.
The patient, Chanarmani Devi, had no Hb (haemoglobin) issue. This THR went without any transfusion of blood.
“The ‘gowns’ used by each of us during the THR were destroyed soon after the surgery,” said a team member.
Dr Anil Kumar explained this: “The gowns are destroyed soon after the surgery just to abort any circumstance to the spread of infection.” The gowns are disposables, he reminded.
In the THR, anaesthetists play a major role as surgeons.
“MMCH’s two anaesthetists Dr Sushmita Soren and Dr Deepak Ram gave a fine piece of spinal anaesthesia to the patient which is a delicate work,” said the Civil Surgeon in a tone highly appreciative of the efforts of the two anaesthetists.

Patient care and recovery
The patient has been given more than a dozen ‘skin stitches’. It will be gradually removed on the condition of the wound.
The patient is under constant medical observation and is responding very well said, Dr Anil Kumar.
Her diet and medicines are well taken care of. There will be no laxity in post-operative care.
“If all goes well, then the patient will be discharged on the 15th or 16th day of the surgery,” the Civil Surgeon said.
Palamu DC Shashi Ranjan in his post on X has given two cheers to the team of the THR surgery.
However, the THR surgery has asked for more facilities like adequate sterilisation, proper bed and light.
