Jamshedpur, Jan 20: A gang of purportedly armed criminals has decamped with ornaments worth lakhs of rupees from a house in the posh Northern Town locality under Bistupur thana area on Sunday night.

What was concerning was that the criminals had posed as courier boys for delivering parcel before swooping over an elderly couple who were at home in the sprawling house.

The incident took place at the house of Ramesh Kauntia, located behind Motilal Nehru Memorial Public School at about 8 pm.

Elderly couple held hostage, jewelry robbed

According to sources, the criminals who were reportedly five in number had entered the premises and pressed the doorbell, pretending themselves to be courier boys. But as soon as Ramesh Kauntia opened the door, the five stormed inside the house and took the elderly man and his wife under control.

The criminals had first blindfolded both the couple and subsequently tied their hands and legs. Then one of the criminals threatened to shoot if tried to shout.

Soon afterwards, the criminals took out the jewelry she had put on and later managed to take all the remaining jewelry that were kept in the almirahs.

After the dacoity was over, the victims somehow managed to set themselves free and informed the police.

FIR lodged, probe on

SP (City) Kumar Shibashish said a special team has been set to unravel the case.

“An FIR has been lodged pertaining to the crime committed at the house of Ramesh Kauntia. We are trying to do our level best to detect the case,” said the City SP, while talking to The Jharkhand Story adding that they are hopeful of getting a breakthrough soon.

The dacoity by the criminals in the guise of courier boys at the posh locality like Northern Town has sent a shock wave across the city.
