Daltonganj, September 30: The female elephant, which was recorded missing since September 12 by the Sadar police on the written complaint of Mirzapur resident Narendra Kumar Shukla, has been discovered in Chapra district in Bihar on September 29.

The female elephant has been found in the compound of Gorakh Singh of Paharpur village under Chapra district.

A police officer said Gorakh Singh claims to have paid 27 lakhs of rupees for this female elephant. He also produced valid papers of the sale and purchase agreement.

However, this buyer Gorakh Singh would continue to have this female elephant till the matter is settled in the court of law here in Daltonganj, said the police officer.

The female elephant was reported to have gone missing since August 11. However, Shukla took one month to file its stealing or missing report on September 12 with the Sadar police station.

Sadar police have drawn a criminal case against three named accused, as mentioned by Shukla in his FIR that he lodged with the Sadar police station on September 12.

The mahout of the female elephant played foul at the instance of the three named accused. The mahout is absconding.

This female elephant was bought by Shukla and three others now accused of selling it surreptitiously, for rupees 40 lakhs only.

SP Reeshma Ramesan said further investigation is on. It’s neither a case of stealing of the female elephant nor of its going missing. It’s a case of partnership going awry.
